The castles and forts along Ghana’s coast are among the most visited heritage sites in West Africa. Cape Coast Castle and Elmina Castle, a short drive apart in the Central Region, are part of a group of forts and castles listed by UNESCO as World Heritage.
Both are places of remembrance as much as history. Visits are usually made with a guide, who explains how the buildings were used during the transatlantic slave trade. Allow time afterwards: many visitors want a quiet hour before moving on.
Cape Coast is roughly three hours west of Accra by road. Travelling early avoids the worst of the traffic and the midday heat, and leaves time for the beach and the town’s fishing harbour.
